Wizz Air Tattoo Policy in 2023 (Flight Attendants & Pilots)

Even though tattoos are far more widely accepted in Europe and around the world than they were not so long ago, certain businesses continue to oppose them.

Without a doubt, the aviation industry takes the top slot on the list.

If you want to work for one of European’s well-known low-cost airlines, Wizz Air, you should probably stick around while we look at the current Wizz Air tattoo policy.

So, are Wizz Air flight attendants (or pilots) allowed to have tattoos?

Wizz Air Tattoo Policy – All You Need to Know

Unfortunately for people with tattoos who want to fly the skies with Wizz Air, the Hungarian carrier has some of the tightest tattoo restrictions in the European aviation industry.

Anyone looking for a job with Wizz Air must not have any tattoos visible while wearing the Wizz Air uniform. Furthermore, the current regulation prohibits the use of bandages or make-up to conceal the ink.

Because the uniforms for men and women are different, the airline has unique tattoo placement restrictions for each gender.

The restricted areas for male and female crews differ slightly, as seen in the image above.

  • Tattoos on the head, face, neck, or hands are not permitted for men
  • Women are not permitted to have tattoos on their heads, faces, necks, hands, or lower legs

As long as your tattoos are not in the “banned” areas, you’re good to go. In fact, there’s no limit on the number of tattoos on your body if they can be easily hidden under Wizz Air’s uniform.

Offensive tattoos are prohibited

The battle is just half won once the visibility requirements are met.

Furthermore, there should be no offensive themes or language in your tattoos. This means that any tattoo that could be seen as hostile, racial, sexist, or otherwise discriminatory will be illegal.

If you have any tattoos containing such content, no matter how qualified you are, you will be unable to work with Wizz Air (and rightly so).

What’s worth pointing out, this rule also applies to tattoos in “coverable” areas.

Ask for Long Sleeves

If you have arm or even full-sleeve tattoos, there is still hope.

Employees at Wizz Air can select between short and long sleeve shirts. If you are willing to wear long sleeves at all times, you should inquire whether tattoos on your arm are acceptable during the job interview.

If you’re really determined to work for the airline, this is a possible option; but, it is far from comfortable, especially during the summer months.

Are Other Airlines More Lenient?

Most airlines in Europe have restrictions very similar to Wizz Air.

There is, however, one notable exception to the rule.

If you have tattoos in places that Wizz Air does not allow, Virgin Atlantic is an excellent alternative. The UK’s carrier crew can now wear visible tattoos as long as they are tasteful, according to a new policy change.

If you’re willing to relocate to another continent, some airlines in the United States have fewer restrictions. Alaska Airlines and United Airlines, for example, permit visible tattoos on flight attendants as long as they are no larger than the uniform badge. SkyWest is allowing small tattoos without exactly defining what “small” is.

Also the leading New Zealand’s carrier, Air New Zealand, allows people with visible tattoos to join the crew.

Why Are Airlines Against Tattoos

While it’s easy to become angry with aviation’s tattoo restrictions (especially if you’re looking for a new job), it’s also crucial to understand why they exist.

The most important reason is the carrier’s image.

Airlines want to convey a certain image to the public, and they fear visible tattoos will harm that image. This is especially true for airlines that cater to families or those attempting to attract a more conservative customer.

Furthermore, some individuals simply dislike seeing tattoos, regardless of how tasteful they are.

It’s critical in a customer-facing sector like aviation to make everyone feel welcome.

Airlines feel that prohibiting tattoos is in their best interests if a portion of their consumers are uncomfortable with them.
